Creepy presents: Richard Corben er en samlet udgave af Corbens tegninger fra Creepy og Eerie hæfterne. Nogle af dem var helt ukendte for mig, andre kendte jeg på forhånd. Og så var der for eksempel Edgar Allan Poe adaptionerne: ‘The Raven’ og ‘The Shadow’, som her i bogen har andre forfattere, mens Corben selv har både skrevet og illustreret udgaverne i De dødes sjæle, der udkom for nyligt på dansk.
Historierne er en blandet landhandel, og det vil føre for vidt at komme ind på dem alle. Men i det meget interessante forord giver José Villarrubia en kort introduktion til hovedparten. Her kommer han ind på inspirationskilder m.m. Blandt andet skriver han om Corbens Poe-illustrationer:
“Creepy pubished many adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe, and Corben took the opportunity to create three masterpieces. To this day Corben has continued to adapt Poe to comics, animation and illustration. In “The Incredible Mr. Poe”, M. Thomas Inge points out that: Richard Corben may well be our most acute and creative interpreter of Poe in visual terms. All of his comic book work has been imbued with the same gothic sensibilities and keen eye for the grotesque that possessed Poe himself.” (side 9)
Historierne er en blanding af sort/hvide tegninger og fuld-farve illustrationer. ‘Lycanklutz’ fra Creepy nr. 56 er den første farvelagte fortælling. Om den skriver José Villarrubia:
“Warren Publishing hired the best comics artists active at the time and printed their art in magazine format in high-quality black and white; unlike comic books, this allowed the reproduction af gray tones. Eventually they started including eight-page color inserts in their publications. Corben had invented a method for coloring that allowed him to manipulate each printing plate individually, which yielded a wide range of colors. Up to that time comics used colaor as a complement to the line art, limited to areas of flat hue to fill spaces between outlines. For Corben, color is an essential expressive element, with psychological, emotional, or symbolic meaning. Corben gave color its own voice, as important as that of the line art … His color breakthrough for Warren was ‘Lycanklutz’.” (side 6)
